Protect Your Vision with Glaucoma Care
Often called the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma is one of the leading causes of permanent vision loss worldwide. The most common type, open-angle glaucoma, develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms. By the time vision changes occur, the damage is often irreversible.
But here’s the good news: Ravine Eye Center and Eye Group's experienced optometrists in Wall and Oakhurst provide advanced glaucoma screenings and care—so you can feel confident, informed, and supported at every step.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually due to increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP). Over time, this damage can lead to peripheral vision loss, and if left untreated, it can cause permanent blindness.
There are several types of glaucoma, but the most common is primary open-angle glaucoma—which develops slowly and painlessly over time. Other types, like angle-closure glaucoma, can appear suddenly and require emergency treatment.
Are You at Risk for Glaucoma?
While anyone can develop glaucoma, you may be at higher risk if you:
- Are over age 40
- Have a family history of glaucoma
- Are African American, Hispanic, or Asian
- Have high eye pressure
- Have thin corneas
- Have been diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease
- Have experienced eye trauma or previous eye surgeries
If any of these apply to you, a comprehensive eye exam is strongly recommended.
Our Glaucoma Testing
Our eye doctors use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to detect glaucoma early—before vision loss occurs. A comprehensive glaucoma exam is non-invasive and typically includes:
- Eye pressure testing (tonometry)
- Optic nerve imaging (OCT or fundus photography)
- Peripheral vision test (visual field)
- Corneal thickness measurement (pachymetry)
- Review of your medical history and risk factors
- A one-on-one discussion about your results and personalized next steps
